EAST RUTHERFORD Nate Solder Color Rush Jersey , N.J. (AP) — future as the quarterback of the New York Giants. The general manager and the two-time Super Bowl MVP had a no-holds barred conversion about Manning’s future Monday after the team missed the playoffs for the sixth time in seven seasons.Gettleman would not say Wednesday whether the quarterback, who will turn 38 on Thursday, would be back for a 16th season.Manning’s $23 million salary cap hit will play a role in the decision, but the bottom line is Gettleman will do what is in the best interests of the Giants (5-11).“He came in and he wanted to talk,” Gettleman said of the conversation. “I have a crazy idea that if a guy asks me questions, I’m going to be honest with him. He wasn’t called to the principal’s office. He came to see me.”Manning, who has a year left on an $84 million contract, threw for 4,299 yards, 21 touchdowns and 11 interceptions this past season despite being sacked a career-high 47 times. His completion percentage (66) was the highest of his career.“Once we got rolling, once everybody got comfortable with the offense, if you’re going to look at stats, it wasn’t too shabby what (he) did,” Gettleman said of Manning. “He still can make the NFL throws, you know what I’m saying? He’s still got it.”There is no doubt Gettleman respects Manning, who he called a “mensch.” It’s a Yiddish word meaning “a person of integrity and honor.”“There’s no deviousness Phil Simms Color Rush Jersey , there’s no duplicitousness, none of that stuff. He’s a mensch. Someday, I hope to be a mensch,” Gettleman said. The question is whether Manning is the best choice to lead the Giants to victory and Gettleman plans to watch plenty of videotape and talk to his coaches and scouting staff in coming to a decision. In a news conference that lasted more than 30 minutes, Gettleman said he liked the direction the Giants are headed. The dissention-ridden locker room from last season (3-13) was cleaned out, leaving only 13 players on the final roster.Among other topics Gettleman touched on:— He said the offense overcame early season woes to lead the NFC East in scoring, but the defensive play needed to improve.— Gettleman said the Giants didn’t re-sign receiver Odell Beckham Jr. to a five-year, $90 million before the season to trade him.— A recent survivor of a bout with cancer, Gettleman was certain he made the right choice drafting running back Saquon Barkley with the second pick overall instead of taking a young quarterback.— The veteran general manager also was happy with Pat Shurmur’s first season as coach, particularly after a 1-7 start.“We’re trying to build sustained success,” said Gettleman, who replaced the fired Jerry Reese last December. “That takes brutal honesty and that takes tough decisions.”— Gettleman would not comment on the status of cornerback Janoris Jenkins and linebacker Olivier Vernon. Both are under contract but each could be a salary cap casualty.“We’re going to look at film, we’re going to evaluate everything. Everything is on the table for us,” Gettleman said.— Looking forward to this year’s draft, Gettleman has no intention of forcing a pick, such as taking a quarterback early because of Manning’s age or a team need.“You do that Harry Carson Color Rush Jersey , you’re going to make a mistake, you’re going to screw it up,” he said.Manning’s father, Archie, recently said his son can’t go through another losing season. Gettleman found it humorous when asked it he could guarantee a winning team next season.“Really and truly, can anybody guarantee anything like that? Really?” he said. “All you Yankee fans thought you were going to win 162 games this year (laughter). I knew better. All kidding aside, you can’t guarantee that. There’s no way. I wouldn’t guarantee that to anybody.”Gettleman believes he heads into this offseason with a better understanding of what Shurmur and his coaches need in terms of players. While the offense was his focus heading into the offseason last year, the defense will occupy that spot now.Despite not making the playoffs, Gettleman does not see this as a rebuilding season. He actually hates the word.“You just keep going, you just keep building. It’s really what we’re doing here,” Gettleman said. “We’re doing our best to accumulate the talent that fits our schemes, and that understands how to play the game, and hates to lose. That’s what it’s really all about, and we’re going to continue to do this and get it right. We’re going to fix it.” Veteran draft analyst talks quarterbacks, other Giants-related draft topics in advance of NFL Combine"WhiteFanposts Fanshots Sections New York Giants NewsGiants Training Camp 2016Giants vs. Eagles 2015, Week 17New York Giants NewsBig Blue View Radio“Gut” says Duke QB Daniel Jones will be Giants’ choice — Draft Countdown’s Scott WrightNew Lawrence Taylor Color Rush Jersey ,116commentsVeteran draft analyst talks quarterbacks, other Giants-related draft topics in advance of NFL CombineESTShareTweetShareShare“Gut” says Duke QB Daniel Jones will be Giants’ choice — Draft Countdown’s Scott WrightDaniel JonesJohn David Mercer-USA TODAY SportsThe great majority of draft analysts believe the New York Giants have to select a quarterback with the sixth overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft. Scott Wright of Draft Countdown agrees, telling me on the latest edition of the ‘Valentine’s Views’ podcast that it “would border on negligence if the Giants didn’t take a quarterback with that pick.”Wright, though, isn’t in the majority when it comes to which quarterback he believes the Giants will ultimately select. Wright has mocked Dwayne Haskins of Ohio State to the Giants in both of his mock drafts, as have most draft analysts, but told me that in the end he doesn’t think Haskins is the quarterback the Giants will end up selecting.“I think ultimately it’s going to come down to Dwayne Haskins of Ohio State and Daniel Jones of Duke with their top pick,” Wright said. “My gut is telling me Daniel Jones could end up being the guy for the Giants. It’s still early, there’s no inside information or anything but if the gut has anything to say I think Daniel Jones might end up in a Giants uniform.”Wright told me last March that he believed there was “no way” the Giants would take a quarterback with the No. 2 overall pick. He proved prophetic as the Giants selected running back Saquon Barkley, who won Offensive Rookie of the Year honors.Wright said he feels “a similar degree of certainty” this year that the Giants will use the No. 6 overall pick on a quarterback.“I thought they should have taken Sam Darnold a year ago. If I was running the team I wouldn’t have bypassed that opportunity,” Wright said.“I think after the way this last season went I think they’re going to be a lot more open to bringing in a quarterback early, as tricky as it might be with Eli Manning. You have to.”Why Jones?Wright said that in both of his mock drafts he has the Giants taking Haskins at No. 6 and the Jacksonville Jaguars taking Jones at No. 7, though he was “very close” to giving Jones to the Giants. He believes it is a “1A and 1B” situation and that Jones’ connections to Eli Manning (through the Manning Passing Academy and workouts at Duke) and Manning’s quarterbacks coach, Duke head coach David Cutcliffe, could be an ”X factor.”“There’s a lot of similarities between him and Eli Manning,” Wright said. “The Giants aren’t trying to reinvent the wheel at the quarterback position. They’re going to go with what they’re comfortable with Carl Banks Color Rush Jersey , and I can’t see any more of a comfort level than with Daniel Jones.“Daniel Jones fits the mold of what the Giants look for at that position.”As far as a scouting report on Jones, Wright said he has a “high floor,” is “polished” and “technically sound.”“I think high floor but also lower ceiling than some of the other options in this class. He’s not the most physically talented of the group by any stretch of the imagination. But what’s kind of attractive about him is he’s kind of a finished product already to a certain degree. He looks exactly the part,” Wright said.“He not overly toolsy, he’s got good size, he’s got adequate arm strength. Personality-wise he’s not going to set the room on fire.”What about Haskins? Wright said that if Haskins was in the 2018 draft class he would have been QB4 behind Baker Mayfield, Sam Darnold and Josh Allen.“Not a statue in the pocket, but he’s close to it. A pocket passer thru and thru,” Wright said. “He’s got good size, he’s got a very strong arm, he can make all the throws. His best football is still ahead of him.”Other topicsWe also talked about a few other draft topics:Potential Day 2 offensive line targets for the Giants. Wright loves Washington’s Kaleb McGary. The plethora of pass rushers in this draft class.Players to keep an eye on during the Combine.Wright’s credsWright may not be one of the best-known draft analysts, but he has long been one of my favorites. He is also historically one of the most accurate when it comes to predicting what will actually happen in the draft. The Huddle Report judges the accuracy of both mock drafts and top 100 big boards. Wrightwas the 2004 mock draft champion, and his average mock draft score of 37.8 (based on 50.0) over the past five years is 17th among 47 analysts graded during that time span. Among top 100 scores, Wright is tied for 14th among 50 analysts scored over the past five years. He is in a group that includes Mike Mayock and his top 100 accuracy has been better than that of Mel Kiper and Gil Brandt.Give the full show a listen below.Where to subscribeYou can find and subscribe to Big Blue View radio from the show’s home page. You can find all the shows on our Big Blue View Radio Hub Page. You can also find the shows and subscribe on all your favorite podcast apps:Apple Podcasts | Google Podcasts | Pocket Casts | Spotify | Stitcher | RSSFinally, be sure to check out the home page for all of the shows across the expanding Vox Media Podcast Network.
