The Falcons already have Austin Hooper as the unquestioned top pass catching tight end, Eric Saubert as the unquestioned top “who is Eric Saubert” tight end, and newly signed Luke Stocker as a blocker. This move surprisingly adds another blocking tight end to the roster.Paulsen may have only caught 9 passes for 91 yards and one touchdown, but he was a solid blocker in the run game and filled in at fullback late in the season. Based on his age and skillset, the deal is likely very team friendly. The move suggests the Falcons will better utilize tight ends in the game plan, likely with Stocker or Paulsen filling in at fullback with the other blocking outside the tackles. That’s right, we might see the right tackle get a little bit of help. Signing Paulsen also suggests that Saubert’s roster spot is in jeopardy. He has yet to catch on as a pass catcher, instead limited mainly to blocking. He may need to catch on with a different team.
